Can Hypnosis Help People With Diabetes?

The simplest and most obvious answer is, of course!  The second question is: how can hypnosis help diabetes?  There is a distinct difference between type 1 and 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is the one I will focus on in this article. 

Its impossible to ignore the reports that diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in our country.  Many people I know are diagnosed as either diabetic or pre-diabetic. The  consequences of unmanaged diabetes are frightening and can be devastating. Although diabetes is officially incurable, type 2 diabetes can be managed into remission.  I have helped several people manage their diabetes by helping them change their relationship with food. I recently had a client who came to me because she was on a lot of medicine for her diabetes and noticed her feet were beginning to bother her and she was scared. She was drinking 10 cups of coffee a day and would not eat vegetables.  She felt helpless and hopeless.  During our session I focused on her relationship with her body, which she was clearly abusing and taking for granted.  She wanted to eat vegetables and develop a healthier relationship with her body.  When she returned, 1 week later, for her follow-up visit and was very pleased and surprised!  Her blood sugar had dramatically changed. She was down to 1 cup of coffee a day and had incorporated several vegetables into her daily routine.  By the third week, her doctor had cut her meds in half and she is soon to reduce that further.  Our bodies respond almost immediately to healthy changes in diet and exercise.  Hypnosis is the fastest, most effective way to help you make those changes that can become permanent habits.

An article in the Diabetes Research Association of America, decribes several specific examples of people using hypnosis to change their insulin requirements and sometimes eliminated the need for insulin.  There are several ways that hypnosis can help with type 2 diabetes: 1. Change eating habits  2. Create a motivation to exercise 3. Manage pain 4.  Decrease desire for junk or unhealthy food  5.  Resolve emotional issues relating to over eating  6.  Change perspective that sometimes creates feelings of hopelessness or helplessness.  7. Provide tools and skills for practicing self-hypnosis for ongoing success.  8.  Teach stress reducing skills.

Diabetes, like so many other common medical conditions we suffer from are life style diseases. Life style diseases are those that are clearly related to eating habits, exercise habits, drinking habits, sleeping habits and stress managing habits.  Medication becomes an easy way out but the long term effects are not good. Changing life style choices are so simple but it is not always easy…Hypnosis can make it easier!  Often clients tell me, “I love sweets!” or “I love comfort foods!”  After hypnosis, they soon redefine sweets as cantaloupe, berries, watermelon or other fruits realizing they don’t have to give up sweets! Even easier is the realization that ‘comfort foods’ make them feel really uncomfortable and they need to focus on how they will feel when they have finished consuming the foods.  Because a belief is nothing more than a thought that gets repeated over and over again, it is not necessarily true.  When they change the belief about sweets and comfort foods, changing old habits becomes easy!

Luckily, type 2 diabetes can almost be eliminated with life style changes and healthy choices.
